Peru State Students Place Social Justice Pledge On T-Shirts

PERU  - Peru State College Council for Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion has announced a week of activities to celebrate social justice in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. beginning Monday, Jan. 15. Activities began Monday with a T-shirt design for goals and pledges for social justice. Black Student Union Vice President Jessie Wentling, a secondary language major from Norfolk, explained the organization’s mission. Westling: “I think having these kinds of activities, it gets people to actually recognize that is something that we want on a campus like this. If you don’t have these activities, they are not going to actually think about it.” Jakia Vaughn-Taylor was among students designing a T-shirt. Vaugh-Taylor: “It gives them an opportunity to see and have a word, you know, have a voice. They are able to write something down for the people to see.” The T-shirts designed Monday will be posted around campus with messages of encouragement and social justice goals. Black Student Union President Marissa Gomez of Omaha and member Hayley McClelland of York also manned the table Monday. Tuesday (1/16): Balloon Activity-“Who Am I?” Wednesday (1/17): PSC Community Wordle. Thursday (1/18): Globe Activity-“Where in the world are you from?” All activities will be held in the entrance to the Student Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Council writes, “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr in his Letter from Birmingham Jail (1963) suggested among other things that social injustice anywhere, against any one, is a threat to justice everywhere and to everyone.”
