It is the time of year when Nebraska seniors are encouraged to take a fresh look at their health and prescription drug coverage during Medicare open enrollment.

Experts stressed a plan that worked well this year may look different in 2027 and noted a low monthly premium does not always mean a Medicare plan will cost less overall.

Jina Ragland, senior associate state director of AARP Nebraska, said deductibles and co-pays must be considered. For seniors weighing their choices, she added help is available before signing up.

“The message I would send to people, in reminding beneficiaries, is they always have time to compare options. You always have time to ask questions and most importantly, you always have the option to seek unbiased assistance before making a decision,” Ragland outlined.

Ragland emphasized some plans available this year may not be offered in 2027, giving seniors another reason to review their options carefully. Medicare open enrollment opened Oct. 15 and runs through Dec. 7. Changes made during this time will take effect Jan. 1.

Adults 65 and older make up more than 18% of Nebraska’s population, according to Census Bureau estimates for 2025.

AARP is also warning seniors to be on the lookout for scams, which often surface during open enrollment. Ragland described one common tactic scammers use.

“If they want to enroll you immediately or they say the offer’s only available today or they claim your coverage will be canceled if you don’t do it immediately, anything that rushes you, that’s another red flag that this is probably not something that you want to get yourself into,” Ragland cautioned.

For free Medicare assistance, seniors can visit the Nebraska Department of Insurance website or call the state helpline at 1-800-234-7119.
