Residents and staff at Quality Senior Villages in Broken Bow are helping make some area birthdays extra special for local families.
On Tuesday afternoon, Quality Senior Villages donated birthday cake kits to the Broken Bow Area Food Pantry. Each kit includes a box of cake mix, a container of frosting, a can of soda, and a set of candles. The soda in each kit is used in place of eggs, oil, and water normally needed for a cake mix which means the cake only requires the mix and can of pop before baking for simplicity.
Tess Trew with Quality Senior Villages said the idea came from looking for a simple project the residents could help with while also giving back to the community. The residents gathered around a large dinner table where they assembled the kits by placing each of the items together.
She said activities like this can be especially meaningful for residents living with dementia or Alzheimer’s, because it can bring back memories of their own experiences with family and community events.
“They all helped doing this growing up as well. They were involved in their communities, and it’s just something to watch their faces light up knowing they contributed back,” said Trew.
The facility is looking for more ways to give their residents ways to get involved with the community, with hints of possible Halloween activities.
The Broken Bow Area Food Pantry serves residents throughout the county with hours of 1 PM to 3 PM Tuesdays and Thursdays on South 6th Avenue in Broken Bow.
