Darlene J. Mattox age 89 of Broken Bow died Friday August 28, 2026, at the Callaway District Hospital.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday September 2, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow. A visitation will be held one hour before the service at Govier Brothers. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Quality Senior Village for handicap ramp improvements. Darlene lived at QSV for the last year and a half of her life. The staff and residents became her extended family.
Darlene Joyce Mattox was born on October 29, 1936, to William “Bunt” and Virginia (Apperson) Mattox in Broken Bow, NE. She attended Rose Valley School until the 8th grade. Darlene would ride Jip to school leaving Joe and Carolyn to ride the slow pony. She graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1955. She attended Bethany Nazarene College in Bethany, OK.
Darlene was known as a very strong independent woman. She loved all her family so much. They remember her as babysitter, the family genealogist, and putting together beautiful photo albums. She loved traveling, Gaither Music and their concerts, sewing and selling her crafts at The Country Store. In her living room she had several cuckoo clocks that “needed” set off at the same time. Over the years she worked at the local, O.P. Skaggs, IGA, Medicine Chest, and Sandhills Manor. She was known by many as the Avon Lady.
Darlene is survived by her brothers Dale (Bev Burnett) Mattox of New Castle, WY, Joseph (Neva Nelson) Mattox of Broken Bow, a sister Carolyn (Roger) Miles of Lincoln, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Max (Donna Brown) Mattox, Donald (Luella Rhoades) Mattox, a sister Faith (Orville) Harrold, nieces Connie Anderson and Debbie Mattox, and nephews Russell Mattox and Rodney Mattox.
