NORTH PLATTE— Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested a semi driver after one person was killed in a crash this morning in western Nebraska.
At approximately 5:20 a.m. Friday, troopers and Lincoln County deputies were called to a serious crash that had just occurred on Interstate 80 near Sutherland, at mile marker 159. The crash involved a semi and a pickup. Preliminary investigation shows that a Nissan Frontier pickup was parked on the shoulder of eastbound I-80, when it was struck by an eastbound semi that had crossed onto the shoulder.
All three occupants of the Nissan were transported to Great Plains Health in North Platte. One of the passengers, an adult female, was pronounced deceased at the hospital. A juvenile passenger has since been flown to Omaha for additional treatment of serious injuries. The driver of the Nissan has been treated and released from the hospital. The driver of the semi was transported to Great Plains Health with minor injuries. A passenger of the semi was not injured.
Following preliminary investigation, the driver of the semi, Fayzali Sharipov, 35, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has been arrested for motor vehicle homicide. He has been lodged in Lincoln County Jail.
Interstate 80 was closed in both directions during the investigation due to the crash occurring on the eastbound shoulder and vehicles coming to rest in the westbound roadway.
The Nebraska State Patrol is conducting a full crash reconstruction investigation, including a Commercial Vehicle post-crash investigation.
