Following a two-and-a-half-hour weather delay, the Sandhills Open Road Challenge road race took place between Arnold and Dunning. A band of showers and thunderstorms delayed the start of Saturday’s race and also forced organizers to make adjustments. Contestants were sent off on a road rally to start the race with a maximum speed of 65 mph and then were able to run the race as normal on the return trip to determine winners in each speed class.
Steve Tasca of Colorado Springs, CO with navigator John David won the Extreme 95 mph class with an average speed of 92.546
Daniel Whipple of Littleton, CO with navigator Matt Christensen won the Extreme 120 mph class with an average speed of 113.606.
Ryan Norris of Beatrice, NE with navigator Ben Reed won the 80 mph class with an average speed of 79.97 mph
Chad Riley of Papillion, NE placed first in the 85 mph vintage class with an average speed of 84.981 mph
Ray Foster of Fairview, TX with navigator David Lamb placed first in the 90 mph class with an average speed of 89.998 mph
Ray Long of Beaumont, TX with navigator Jenny Nguyen won the 95 mph class with an average speed of 95.001 mph
First place in the 100 mph class went to Mike and Julie Hill of Allen, TX with a perfect avg. speed of 100 mph
Brad Haskett and Brian Haskett of Magnolia, TX took top honors in the 105 mph class with a perfect average speed of 105 mph
The 110 mph class was won by Mike Black of Garland, TX with an average speed of 110.001 mph
Ryan Furstenau of Neligh, NE with navigator Rich Clements placed first in the 115 mph class with an average speed of 115.017 mph
Chad Christensen of Lincoln, NE with navigator Aaron Wells won the 120 mph class with an average speed of 119.931 mph
The 125 mph class was won by Ted Hughes of Seward, NE with navigator Lindy Dailey with an avergae speed of 124.985 mph
Other highlights from this year’s S.O.R.C events included Jeremy Boldt of Omaha, NE being crowned as “King of the Hill” posting the fastest speed in this year’s 1 mile shootout at 215 mph. The fastest speed in the 1/2 mile shootout was turned in by Eric Schmidt of Lincoln, NE with a speed of 155.2 mph.
In the Loup 2 Loup race held Thursday between Halsey and Purdum, Dan Aksamit of Broomfield, CO was the closest to perfect among all speed classes. Aksamit was .031 seconds off perfect time and finished with an average speed of 109.996 mph to win the 110 mph class.
