The National High School Finals Rodeo completed its first go round Wednesday at the Sandhills Global Event Center in Lincoln, NE.
Among the top highlights for team Nebraska in the opening go round came from area cowboy Cotter Johnston of Stapleton. Johnston posted a time of 4.86 seconds in the steer wrestling competition on his first run during the 2nd overall performance of the finals Monday morning. That was the fastest time of the performance and has him sitting sixth overall in the standings entering the second go round. The top time in the event after the first go was posted by Weston Smyth of Huthchinson, Kansas at 3.52 seconds. Johnston is scheduled to make his second run during Friday night’s performance.
In other area highlights from the finals, Broken Bow’s Kelstyn Lindner had a qualified ride in the first go round of the barebacks competition. Lindner scored a 60 on his first ride which has him sitting 35th overall in the standings after the opening go round. Lindner is scheduled to make his second ride Friday night.
Other highlights for team Nebraska in the first go round, Callie Olson of Bloomfield posted a score of 296.5 in the reined cow horse competition and was sitting in a tie for second after the first go. Kinsey Walz of Ainsworth is in a tie for ninth in the pole bending and is in the top 15 of the reined cow horse competition tied for 12th after the first go.
Jacob Wilson of Arthur and Dalton Dugan of St. Paul are in the top 15 of team roping after the first go. The duo posted a time of 7.4 seconds which is 14th best after the first go round.
In the team competition, Texas leads in the girls standings, Oklahoma is atop the boys standings, and Texas is tied with Oklahoma for first in the combined standings. Nebraska is ninth in the girls standings, 16th in the boys standings, and 14th in the combined standings after the first go.
The National High School Finals Rodeo concludes on Saturday.
