As Custer County Youth Sports moves into year two of its existence, they are looking to add more opportunities for youth in the area. Among the additions coming this fall is a volleyball league for girls age groups 3rd – 4th grade and 5th – 6th grade. The league would include Broken Bow and surrounding communities with the season running from September 12th to October 17th. CCYS board members Samantha Jensen and Chelsea Gillespie visited with KCNI/KBBN about the new program and said it is an opportunity to provide a consistent program for girls interested in volleyball to perform and practice the skills they may learn from camps they have attended. Gillespie shared what inspired the group to add youth volleyball to its list of programs.
“It was an idea that kind of came together last year, last volleyball season, when my daughter played and you could just see how hard these coaches worked to try and find these opportunities for these girls. They were having to just kind of go all over the place and a lot of them were looking for something to have a consistent schedule, like something local that they didn’t have to travel two hours to go play volleyball for these girls. And I mean, kudos to those coaches for doing that and providing that for those towns.”

The group will also be adding the opportunity for young girls to join a cheer program this fall. Jensen explains
“They’ll practice like on Monday nights in September and actually August. We start in the middle of August. They’ll practice their cheers, they’ll learn a couple basic cheers as they progress. They might learn more complex dances and stuff, and then we’re actually partnering with the Broken Bow Football Club to have the girls then go cheer for their classmates when they play flag football and tackle football.”
