The Custer County Board of Supervisors met in regular session on Tuesday, July 14th at the Custer County Courthouse. All members were present.
During committee reports, Sara Parliament mentioned that Lanette Doane of Ansley had contacted all village and town clerks in the county. A planning session for those clerks to discuss the recycling center will be held in August.
Under the discussion and decision agenda items, the Board approved signing communications tower purchase agreements with the Village of Ansley and with the Region 26 Council, approved accepting a settlement check from TAMKO for defective shingles, and accepted a bid from Weathercraft in Broken Bow for shingling the DHHS building.
Board of Equalization Meetings
The Supervisors entered into a regular meeting of the Board of Equalization (BOE) twice on Tuesday. During the first meeting, County Treasurer Sheri Bryant presented the annual motor vehicle exempt applications that are due in July. The BOE approved all requests except for one. More information is needed from that applicant and moved consideration of that request to the July 28th meeting.
The second BOE meeting dealt with the recent property valuation protests. County Assessor Elise Taylor was present during the meeting as each board member reviewed protests filed by their respective constituents. Over 80 property valuation protests were discussed and about 16% of those were granted a change in valuation to either their land, buildings, or both.
Damaged real property was also discussed during the second BOE meeting. These properties were among those affected by recent fires. According to Ms. Taylor, an owner of real property that became damaged on or after January 1 and before July 1 of the current assessment year can file a Form 425 Report of Damaged Property. The State of Nebraska Department of Revenue allows for possible reassessment of the property if damage is more than 20% of the assessed value. Again, each board member reviewed the applications filed by their respective constituents. No changes were approved for land values, but some adjustments to buildings were approved.
The meeting adjourned at 12:30 p.m. The Supervisors will meet again this month on July 28th at 9:00 a.m. in the courthouse.
