Members of the Broken Bow School Board Meet Monday Evening

With the school season just about wrapped up, the Broken Bow Board of Education met in a brief regular session Monday evening, May 18. Board President Tom Osmond called the meeting to order at 6:00 PM. Board Member Colby Fisher was the lone absence from the meeting.

Board Treasurer Jennifer Jackson reported $710,000 in revenue for the prior month, against just over $1 Million in expenses. One item of note was a payment of $13,633 to Stelling Brass. It was noted that this was for a number of instrument repairs. BBPS Superintendent Darren Tobey said he would also be working with incoming band director Ally Phillips to ensure the band has the right equipment to perform next year.

Osmond also noted that he and Tobey will meet with the district’s attorneys in late July regarding the financial fraud losses from last year. The pair hope to be able to provide an update on where the recovery efforts stand at the end of the summer.

In district accolades, the board noted graduation was a success on May 9 in the new High School Gym. Tobey expressed his thanks to the board members who were able to assist. The board members noted especially the additional seating provided in the gym, helping relieve some of the congestion experienced in prior years.

Tobey also indicated that the FBLA group is currently carrying out fundraising activities in preparation for their trip to San Antonio for the National Leadership Conference in late June.

MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Testing scores continue to set new records at BBPS. The board applauded impressive improvements over the past 6-7 years that the achievement testing program has been in place. To end the year, both the third and fourth graders scored in the 99th percentile for math scores nationally.

Tobey said he was proud of the the staff and students, continuing to work toward improvement. With scores averaging in the 80th percentile, the task now will be to sustain the successes already seen.

One final item of news, Board Member Amy Staples will be leaving the school board in July. Osmond stated that the board would establish a committee to appoint a new member within 30-45 days of her move from the area.

With no additional business before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 6:13 PM.

The last day for students at BBPS will be Friday, May 22. The next scheduled meetings of the BBPS School Board are the Working Session on Monday, June 1 at 12:00, and the Regular Session on Monday, June 15 at 6:00 PM in the BBPS District Conference Room
