Help sought at fishing events for kids in Broken Bow

Volunteers are being sought to help North Park Elementary students experience fishing next week at the pond in Melham Park in Broken Bow.

North Park Elementary Principal Malachi Behrens said the school will bring a fishing trailer from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission to Broken Bow for students to use from May 18 through May 21.

“They have these fishing trailers that are available to organizations and schools and things,” said Behrens. “So we’re going to go pick up a fishing trailer and it’s equipped with all the things that you would need to go fishing, so rods and reels and bait and hooks.”

Behrens said an estimated 200 to 300 students are expected to take part in the fishing opportunity throughout the week. He said volunteers are needed to help students with casting, tangled fishing lines, and other basics while spending time outdoors.

“It’s not like you have to be a pro fisherman,” Behrens said. “There’s going to be some snags, there’s going to be some kids that get frustrated in things. But we’re just looking for some volunteers if people are willing to meet us down at Melham and just assist in the process.”

Fishing sessions are scheduled for Monday from 11 AM to 3:15 PM, Tuesday from 9 AM to 2 PM, Wednesday from 12:30 PM to 2 PM, and Thursday from 1:30 PM to 3 PM.

Behrens said volunteers can help for as little as an hour and a half and don’t need a fishing license to participate.

Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to contact North Park Elementary at 308-872-6821 extension 3 or reach out through the school’s social media pages.
