Local fire departments playing it safe with burn permit issuance

More precipitation was measured in April 2026 at the KCNI/KBBN studios in Broken Bow than had been measured in the previous five months combined. And yet, the popular opinion circulating in conversation is that conditions are still very dry and fire danger has not been put in the ‘rearview mirror’.

As a result, despite no active statewide burning ban from Governor Jim Pillen, local fire departments are continuing to pause their issuance of burn permits to citizens. Response to the Pressey Fire, which burned over 9,000 acres between Oconto and Broken Bow late last month brought statewide response to the blaze which was fueled by exceptionally dry grass and timber.

Below are statements on burning made by area departments that KCNI/KBBN is aware of. This does not mean that others do not have restrictions in place.

Ansley: Burn permits not being issued. Those who burn will be issued a citation.
Broken Bow:
No burn permits issued, no open burning until further notice
Litchfield: Burn ban in effect until further notice
Loup City:
Restriction on use of personal fire pits and burn barrels lifted. Common sense asked to be used (consider winds and conditions). No burning when winds over 15 MPH, use screens over fires to control embers. No burn permits being issued.
Miller:
Burn ban. No burn permits issued, use of burn barrels and fire pits prohibited. Citations will be written for unauthorized burning.
Oconto: Fire ban in place (trash, fire pits, brush/tree fires). No burn permits issued until further notice.
