Broken Bow Police details investigation into vehicle taken, crashed earlier this month

BROKEN BOW, Neb.— The Broken Bow Police Department says that Austin Welty, age 33 of Broken Bow, was arrested late last week as the result of an investigation into the unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and a subsequent crash earlier in the month.

Reports were received around 9:30 AM on April 5 that a vehicle had been used without the owner’s permission. Later that morning, the Custer County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) responded to a motor vehicle accident involving the vehicle on Road 450 south of Highway 2.

Through coordination with CCSO, sufficient evidence was gathered for an arrest warrant for Welty to be obtained. He was located and arrested on April 10 and charged with misdemeanors and a felony including unlawful use of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident, criminal mischief, and terroristic threats.

As of the publishing of this story, court documents do not indicate an upcoming court date for Welty.

The investigation remains ongoing.
