The annual spring rummage sale to benefit the Jennie M. Melham Memorial Medical Center Auxiliary is set for the week of April 19th. The community is asked to donate items that are clean and in good condition for the sale. The collection of items will take place on Sunday, April 19th (1-5) and Monday, April 20th (8-6) at the Broken Bow Municipal Building (the site of the sale). During a recent edition of KCNI’s Public Affairs, Auxiliary President Jan Doggett said that a portion of the funds raised will once again be used to benefit students who plan to pursue or are currently pursuing a career in the medical field through the auxiliary’s healthcare scholarship fund.
“Yes, well this year we plan to do what we did a couple years ago. We decided to do like a college student (enrolled in a medical field of study) and we have done that in the past years too. Then we do three or four (for high school graduates). Since we have enough money we’re going to do four scholarships for the nursing then we’re going to have an alternate. I think this year we had like eight or nine apply so that’s a little bit over average. Sometimes we have four or five or so.”
Proceeds from the fundraising sale are also used to help fund improvements at the Melham Medical Center. Doggett said the auxiliary works closely with the hospital and current CEO Kyle Kellum to identify and assist in fulfilling some of the hospital needs.
“Kyle comes for our meetings and he always gives us suggestions on what the hospital needs and we vote on it and then we kind of take it from there like the ice machine and things for the Emergency room and waiting area. We did that and then we are working on some special wheelchairs this year.”
This year’s sale days are scheduled for Tuesday, April 21st (8-7), Wednesday, April 22nd (8-7), and Thursday, April 23rd (8-1). Volunteer help would be appreciated especially during bundle days and for cleanup following the conclusion of the sale.
