Low humidity, strong west winds to fuel dangerous fire conditions Thursday

The National Weather Service (NWS) is warning of expected dangerous fire weather conditions across the area on Thursday. Low humidity and very strong west winds are cited as the reason for concern.

A red flag warning has been placed for much of the state by the NWS from Thursday afternoon through mid-evening. Temperatures across the region are expected in the 70s, minimum relative humidity will be between just 12 and 20 percent, and winds are expected to gust between 45 and 65 mph.

Counties in the Sandhills are also in a high wind watch Thursday morning through Thursday evening, with sustained west winds of 35 to 45 mph that could gust as high as 65 mph.

Should a fire spark, the combination of low humidity and strong winds could lead to rapid and difficult to control fire spread.

Fire departments across the state have put a hold on burn permit issuances and several burn bans are in place.

In addition to not starting fires intentionally, citizens are asked to use extra caution with equipment that has rubbing parts, metal that could drag and spark on trailers and equipment being pulled down the road, and hot exhaust or brakes when parking in long grass.

If you notice a fire, do not assume it has been reported by another party. Dial 911 immediately.
