Area girls teams played opening round MNAC basketball tournament games and the Broken Bow girls and boys teams were in SWC tournament action on Tuesday night.
Bow girls advance in SWC tournament
In girls SWC action broadcast on KCNI, the Broken Bow girls picked up a win as the #5 seed over #4 seed Minden by a score of 51-40. Broken Bow outscored Minden 18-8 in the fourth quarter to secure the win. Halle Quinn was one of three Indians in double figures, tossing in 15 points. McKenna Jacobsen contributed 14, while Charlee Myers scored 13. On the other side of the SWC girls bracket, Gothenburg defeated Cozad 78-19 and Holdrege edged McCook 44-41 to advance to the semifinals.
Broken Bow advances to play #1 Ogallala on Friday at 3:30 PM at North Platte Community College, a game that will be broadcast on KCNI 1280 AM, 96.3 FM, KCNI1280.com, and the free KCNI app.
The Broken Bow boys faced Gothenburg in round one of the boys SWC tournament Tuesday night in Gothenburg. Gothenburg held off the Indians 58-47 to advance to the semifinals where they will face Cozad who defeated Holdrege 83-51. In other SWC boys action, McCook defeated Minden 74-64. McCook will face top seed Ogallala in the semifinals on Friday. The Broken Bow boys drop to the consolation bracket with games scheduled for Thursday.
Anselmo-Merna girls punch ticket to MNAC semis
In Merna Tuesday night, the Anselmo-Merna Coyotes hosted Twin Loup in a #4 and #5 matchup respectively. The Coyotes outscored the Wolves by 8 in the opening quarter but struggled to put Twin Loup away, outscoring them by 3 and 2 in the next two quarters respectively. It was shortly after that the Coyotes went on a 19-1 run to close the game and take the win 46-23.
Lily Thornton led the A-M scoring with 15, Rhianen Myers had 7. Twin Loup’s Loreena Schauda had 9. The win was the 100th for Anselmo-Merna head coach Trent Kirchmann.

Anselmo-Merna will face #1 Mullen in the girls semifinals at Broken Bow high school on Thursday. On the other side of the bracket, Sandhills/Thedford defeated Arthur County 49-21 and Brady defeated South Loup 61-30. Brady will face Sandhills/Thedford in the other girls semifinal on Thursday. All MNAC girls and boys semifinals, 3rd place, and championship games can be heard on KBBN and watched on Sandhills Express (YouTube and Facebook Live).
