The Broken Bow American Legion seniors baseball team remained unbeaten in the B6 area tournament being played at Paul Brown Field. Broken Bow held on for a 3-2 win against McCook Saturday to advance to Monday’s round. Broken Bow scored a run in the first, a run in the second, and another in the fifth to build a 3-0 lead. Max Denson was on the mound for Broken Bow and threw five scoreless no-hit innings to start. McCook fought back in the sixth collecting two hits and loaded the bases with nobody out. McCook would end up scoring two runs, but Denson helped limit the damage with 2 of his 12 strikeouts coming in the inning to keep Broken Bow in front. Denson pitched into the seventh before reaching his maximum number of pitches. Dominic Nowak came in with the tying run on base to record the final two outs of the game. Nowak was 2 for 3 at the plate with 1 RBI and Jackson Hall also had a multi-hit game finishing 2 for 3 with 1 RBI. With the win, Broken Bow is the only remaining unbeaten team in the tournament after the opening two rounds.
Earlier in the day, Minden stayed alive in the double elimination tournament handing top seed Holdrege its first loss of the tournament. After falling to McCook in the opening round on Friday, Minden scored five unanswered runs in the final two inning to come back and defeat Holdrege 7-3. Saturday started with Louisville/Weeping Water knocking out O’Neill 8-4 in the elimination bracket.
As a result of the way round two played out, Broken Bow will not play again until Monday. Two elimination games will be played on Sunday with Minden facing Louisville/Weeping Water and Holdrege will face McCook. Broken Bow will play the McCook / Holdrege winner on Monday night at 7 p.m. Monday’s game will be broadcast on KBBN 95.3 FM and kbbn.com.
