Tree Giveaway Set for Thursday

In recognition of Arbor Day coming up on Friday April 25th, the Simple Living Book Club will once again be hosting a tree giveaway on Thursday April 24th.  Book Club member Polly Blackburn was a guest on KCNI’s Public Affairs and shared that the book club wants to help keep the tradition of Arbor Day alive and helping organize the tree giveaway is a great way to do that.

“Arbor Day started in 1872 and it’s estimated that 1 million trees were planted in Nebraska on that day and it started in Nebraska.  So we do want to keep that tradition alive so we are encouraging everybody if they can plant trees on Arbor Day we are giving them away a day before and believe it or not it was suppose to rain on Arbor Day so we moved the day to Thursday and now it’s suppose to rain on Thursday but we are going to do it on Thursday anyway.”

Blackburn said the focus will be on wildlife and habitat trees this year.

“The type of trees that we’re going to have this year, we are focusing on wildlife and habitat trees.  We are especially encouraging people to plant native trees.  We have nineteen choices of trees.  Not all of them are native but they are all trees that grow well here and have wildlife benefit.”

To reserve a tree, one is asked to call or text Polly Blackburn at (253) 326-3104.  The trees can then be picked up on Thursday (4/24) from 2-4 p.m. on the north side of the Broken Bow City Square.
