Custer County District Court News From April 17th

Only one criminal case came before Judge Karin Noakes in Custer County District Court on Thursday, April 17th.

Jesse L. Menzie, age 49 of Sargent, appeared remotely for a competency review. His counsel, Andrew Hanquist was present in court. Deputy County Attorney Kayla Clark offered a competency evaluation of the defendant as an exhibit. The evaluation was conducted by staff at the Lincoln Regional Center (LRC) and was dated April 15, 2025.

The evaluation stated progress was being made by the defendant, but LRC found Menzie was still not competent to stand trial. No objection was offered by the defendant’s counsel and Judge Noakes accepted the exhibit into evidence. Another competency review was scheduled for June 5th.

Menzie was charged with one count of 1st degree assault, a Class II felony; one count of child abuse, a Class IIIA felony, one count of stalking, a Class IIIA felony; and one count of criminal mischief, a Class III misdemeanor in August of 2024.
