With the arrival of the Lenten season, the Knights of Columbus have released their schedule of fish fries for 2025. March 7 through April 11, fries will be held in six different locations in Custer County.
Paul Holland said that the work for each fish fry starts in the morning through preparation.
“There’s usually three or four of us that start out early, about 9 o clock in the morning getting things prepared to go to the site. Then we get fifteen, ten to fifteen people that show up to help cook the fish and serve the fish,” said Holland.
Proceeds from the fish fries, which run from 5:30 until 7 PM on each date, support various Knights of Columbus involvements including Santa Cop, a scholarship, hoop shoot, and a newer fundraiser the group spearheads.
“We give each person or each family a baby bottle on mothers day and we ask them to fill it up with their change. Then we pick it back up on father’s day and it goes to the birthing centers around the state, I think there are 21 of them,” Holland explained.
This year’s March 14 fry in Broken Bow will double as the Catholic Daughters bake sale. The April 11 fry in Ansley will see proceeds go to the Ryan family, who lost their home in a fire in February.
“We have a pretty good dinner for what we charge. We have the fish, shrimp, potato salad, cole slaw, macaroni and cheese for the kids. We even have a three bean salad. Drinks. So it works out pretty good,” said Holland.
Kids 0 to 4 are free, kids 5 to 11 are $6, and those ages 12 and up are $12 each. Dates for Knights of Columbus fish fries are as follows:
- March 7, Merna, Merna Community Center
- March 14, Broken Bow, St. Joseph Parish Center
- March 21, Callaway, Callaway Community Center
- March 28, Anselmo, Anselmo Fire Hall
- April 4, Sargent, Sargent Community Center
- April 11, Ansley, Ansley Community Center
