Area Wrestlers Prepare for District Wrestling Tournaments This Week

High School wrestlers across the state of Nebraska will be competing this weekend for the opportunity to advance to the NSAA state wrestling championships next week in Omaha.   Broken Bow will be among the teams competing at the C-1 district tournament in Malcolm.  It will be a one day tournament on Saturday with matches beginning at 9 a.m.  Joining Broken Bow in the district will be teams from Arlington, Battle Creek, Boone Central, Centura, Falls City, Freeman, Lincoln Lutheran, Madison, Malcolm, Norfolk Catholic, O’Neill, Palmyra, Scotus Central Catholic of Columbus, Syracuse, and Tri County.  Broken Bow head wrestling coach Ed Schaaf visited with KCNI/KBBN sports about the district meet.

“There’s some teams out there we haven’t necessarily seen.  The bad thing is, the teams we have seen are like Battle Creek and Syracuse and they’re both super tough.  The other teams, looking through the district, they’ll have some good kids.  They might not be as deep.  They might not have the 8-10 good kids.  They’re just going to have 3-4 but still when we get down there it’s about finding the matchups and finding the places where we can get someone through to the state tournament.”

The district tournaments in Class D will be two day tournaments beginning on Friday and concluding on Saturday.  Anselmo-Merna, Burwell, Sandhills/Thedford, South Loup, and Twin Loup will be among the area teams competing at the D-1 district tournament in Shelton.  Ansley/Litchfield and SEM will compete at the D-2 district hosted by Wilcox-Hildreth.  Arcadia/Loup City will be at the D-3 district tournament at Central Valley in Greeley while Mullen and Sandhills Valley will both compete at the D-4 district tournament in Sutherland.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class from each district in all classes will qualify for the state tournament which is scheduled for February 20th, 21st, and 22nd at the CHI Health Center in Omaha.

Central Nebraska’s Sports Source will be live at the C-1 district tournament in Malcolm on Saturday providing live coverage of Broken Bow matches as well as giving updates and reports on other districts which include teams within the KCNI/KBBN coverage area.  Coverage can be heard on KBBN 95.3 FM and kbbn.com.
