City Council takes first step toward negotiating new interlocal agreement

“It is in the interest of transparency to let the council and public know that I will be instructing Dave Schmidt, City Administrator, to have a resolution prepared for the next meeting, that if passed will authorize the senate of Custer County Communications regarding our desire to terminate our current interlocal agreement.”

Those were the words of Broken Bow Mayor Rod Sonnichsen at the close of last night’s City Council meeting, letting Custer County Communications know that the city would like to renegotiate their current interlocal agreement.

City Administrator Schmidt said the agreement between the city and county communications office is still in effect for another twelve months, but the Mayor’s proclamation sets the stage for the two parties to come up with a better agreement.

Schmidt said the current contract has been in effect since around the turn of the century and the city, while still happy with the vast majority of their dealings, would like to update some aspects of the agreement that will benefit Broken Bow. The city now pays 45% of communications’ budget.

Council will vote to approve or deny renegotiating the interlocal agreement at their next meeting February 25th.

In other business from Tuesday evening’s meeting, Council voted to approve Myers Construction to do water main replacements in the city. Myers had the lowest of the two bids submitted, at $432,190. Councilman Wamsley abstained from voting.

Also at the short meeting, Council approved the Broken Bow Volunteer Fire Department bylaws, with Councilman Holland abstaining.

At 6:10pm, Council went into executive session. Council returned at 6:30 and adjourned.

The City Council will meet February 25th at 6pm at the Broken Bow Municipal Building.
