Residents safely evacuated in Callaway house fire

A house fire in Callaway on Monday morning brought three fire departments to town.

Callaway Fire and Rescue was first on the scene at 404 E. Dorrance St. to respond to a fire on the main floor of a single-family dwelling shortly after 9am. All residents of the home were safely evacuated, although according to Callaway Fire Chief Dan Trumbull three pets perished in the fire.

Callaway Fire Department extinguished the fire with assistance from the Oconto  and Broken Bow fire departments. Custer County Emergency Management reports the house is a total loss.

Trumbull said the state fire marshal determined the cause of the fire was unattended candles burning in a bedroom.
