A late morning fire on Monday at Pressey Park north of Oconto was quickly extinguished by the Oconto fire department with mutual aid from the Broken Bow fire department.
The fire was called in at 11am Monday after it was spotted by some cedar trees near the campgrounds, and burned less than an acre of grass before it was put out by 11:30, according to Oconto Assistant Fire Chief Jared Eggleston.
Eggleston said they called the State Fire Marshall, and as of Tuesday morning a cause for the fire has not been determined.
This fire is one of several blazes in the KCNI/KBBN listening area that has been extinguished quickly due to the quick response of local fire departments. If you spot a fire, you are encouraged to not assume it has been called in and dial 911.
Dry conditions continue into the month of February for the area. After just .12″ of precipitation was measured at the KCNI/KBBN studios in January, the month of February has started completely dry.
Local departments are continuing to urge citizens to not toss cigarette butts, burn outdoors, have campfires, travel off-road, use machinery that can spark, or weld due to dry conditions.
