Elks Coat Drive a rousing success

Three hundred and fifty people in Broken Bow and surrounding communities are warmer now due to the Broken Bow Elks Coat and Clothing Drive.

The Elks collected the new or gently used coats, and then distributed the garments to needy people in several communities, according to Paul Loy.

“We have a lot of coats, a lot of socks, the people of Custer County and the surrounding area, I should say, because we don’t stop at the county line by any means. I’m just in awe that we can put that many coats back out on people’s backs and keep them warm.”

Becky Loy said the drive’s success is owed to several entities.

“We received a grant through the Custer County Foundation, and we were able to buy 33 coats with the money that they graciously set aside for us to have from their grant process. We are always thankful for community connection for being our go-between to allow people to come in and have access to the coats that we gather. We are also so thankful to the Custer County Chief, because they allow people to drop them off and they’ve gathered donations for us.”

Loy also thanked a group of ladies from Dunning and Brewster who knitted and crocheted many hats, scarfs and gloves to donate to the drive, and the Friendship Circle from the United Methodist Church donated money so they could purchase socks in various kids sizes. The Broken Bow Elks lodge also was very gracious with donations to the drive.

Loy mentioned the Elks are encouraging high school seniors to apply for upcoming scholarships to be awarded, for more information click here: https://bbps.org/counselors-corner/
