Public invited to Comstock for poetry gathering Saturday

The 19th annual Comstock Cowboy Poetry and Music Gathering is tomorrow (November 2nd) at the Wescott Baptist Church in Comstock starting at 1 PM.

RP Smith and Don Schauda joined KCNI/KBBN on the Get Up & Go Breakfast Show to talk about the event, which will kick off with an afternoon of western lore and legend. No admission will be charged, with all proceeds from the day going to the youth group’s Samaritan’s Purse shoebox project.

“We’ve got a bunch of poets and singers coming in from around the country. Some of them have been there before, we always have a new one or two and RP’s been good about this every year kind of stepping in and helping us out and we’re going to feature him on the evening show,” said Schauda.

The church youth will serve a donation-priced supper at 5:45 PM, followed by the evening performance at 7 PM, featuring Susie Knight of Conifer, Colorado, R.P. Smith, Rick Buoy of Ainsworth, and George Ray Russell of Boulder, Colorado.

Other artists performing through the day will be Bill Potter of Kearney, Jan Schiferl of Fordyce and Marty Blocker of Henderson.

The day’s activities will come to a close with what Schauda called a “world class” pie auction, an opportunity for attendees to support the church’s shoebox project benefit.

“We’ve gotten to where we’re packing 500 or 600 boxes. I don’t know if that’s a lot, it’s a lot for us. But anyway, it turns out this pie auction is what helps pay the postage on getting those boxes sent out,” Schauda explained.

The morning after the poetry and music, cowboy church will be held on Sunday morning starting at 10:30 featuring several of the poets and singers.
