BROKEN BOW – Broken Bow City Council met Tuesday night at the Municipal Building starting at 6 PM. Russ Smith and Chris Myers were absent but excused.
Tuesday’s meeting started with a special retirement of Broken Bow Police Department’s K9 Sam, who served in Broken Bow for 5 1/2 years after being in Gordon for 2 1/2 years.

City Administrator Dave Schmidt presented Sam with a plaque and a basket of treats and toys and Chief Steve Scott presented Captain Chris Anderson with a gift on behalf of the department. K9 Sam’s “end of watch” call was heard from dispatch on radios throughout the room before the two were given a much-deserved round of applause by all in attendance. K9 Sam will retire at the home of his handler, Captain Anderson.
K9 Maverick was brought into the Municipal Building to be introduced as the department’s next K9. Officer Josh Townsend has been working with K9 Maverick since he was donated to the department. Like his predecessor, the two year old German Shepherd will contribute with narcotics detection but will also be used for tracking.

In new business discussions, a conditional use permit was approved at 1451 North 17th Avenue for SG Concrete Pros, allowing for the operation of a commercial concrete business in an agricultural district.
The approval came after a recommendation for such from the planning commission, which heard several concerns from both sides of the issue. Three conditions were included in the permit being approved:
- All construction and demolition materials, trash, and cut down trees must be removed from the vicinity within 90 days after the potential approval by City Council
- A fence must be erected and maintained on the north property line separating the business from the residential property
- There shall be no storage or processing of crushed concrete on the property.
After hearing from David Baltz, head of Emergency Services, council approved an agreement for Dr. Jordan Homan to be the Broken Bow Emergency Medical Services Medical Director. Baltz said Homan would supervise ambulance services as well as state protocol while overall helping with the “smooth operation” of the continually-expanding department. Homan will be compensated $2,500 annually on December 1st.
Tuesday’s meeting adjourned at 6:20 PM.
