Pie bakers of all experience levels and Sandhills historians of all ages are invited to the Sandhills Journey National Scenic Byway Visitor Center tomorrow (October 10). Throughout the day from 10 AM to 5 PM, a pie baking contest and an open house of the recently-constructed sod house will be taking place.

Organizers are looking to add the name of another champion pie-baker to the plaque that hangs inside the visitor center just east of Broken Bow, and Thursday is the day that will be determined. Those wishing to enter a pie into the contest can drop their entries off at the barn between 10 AM and 3 PM. The contest judging will begin at 4:15 PM. Those unable to deliver their pie to the barn can call the Custer County Chief to arrange the picking up of your pie at 308-872-2471.
The pie baking contest will run as follows:
- One 9″ two crust fruit or fall pie (in a disposable tin)
- Crust can be pie crust or cracker crust
- Topping can be pie crust or crumb topping (no soft pies)
- Pies will be judged on overall taste and appearance. One winner will be the SJNSB Pie Champion for 2024 with their name on the plaque that hangs at the red barn.
- Pies will then be served for free will donations
While the pie baking contest drop-offs and judging are underway, visitors throughout the day are invited to take a short walk up the hill behind the visitor center to take a peek inside the sod house. Throughout the time since construction was completed, several furnishings have been placed inside of the sod house.
