The Broken Bow American Legion seniors baseball team saw their season come to an end Monday evening at the Class B Area 6 tournament as they fell to Holdrege 7-6 in an elimination game. The two teams went back and forth in the first three innings. Broken Bow took the early lead with 2 runs in the bottom of the first but Holdrege quickly responded with a 4 run second inning to take the lead. Broken Bow quickly regained the lead scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the second and then added another run in the third to lead 6-4. The score stayed that way until the sixth when Josh Janssen of Holdrege delivered a two out base hit with the bases loaded to drive in two runs and tie the game.
The tie was broken in the top of the 7th when Zac Sundquist of Holdrege scored on a sacrifice fly to make the score 7-6. Broken Bow was able to get the tying run on base in the bottom of the 7th but could not score as Holdrege held on for the win.
Max Denson had two of Broken Bow’s five hits in the game. Denson finished 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI. Broken Bow ends its season with an overall record of 18-8.
Holdrege advances to the area tournament championship round on Tuesday where they will face Central City for the title. Central City defeated Minden on Monday 11-4 to remain undefeated in the tournament. Central City and Holdrege met earlier in the tournament with Central City winning 11-9. Central City needs one win to claim the tournament championship while Holdrege would have to defeat Central City twice on Tuesday to win the tournament. The game(s) will take place at Paul Brown Field in Broken Bow.
Both teams are assured a spot in the Class B Senior Legion state tournament. Holdrege receives an automatic bid to the tournament as they will serve as the host team this year. As a result, Central City will be the Area 6 representative in the state tournament regardless of whether they finish first or second.
The Class B state tournament begins Saturday (8/3).
