ANSELMO, NE – First responders quickly controlled a blaze that sparked between Anselmo and Merna near Highway 2 and Road 430 on Monday just after noon (June 24).

Flames could be seen on the opposite side of the tracks from Highway 2 as Anselmo firefighters already on scene approached the fire. Merna crews were asked to stand down shortly after initial calls to respond.
Despite delays from back-to-back eastbound and westbound trains, additional crews were able to cross the tracks and assist in the response.
The fire was limited to the grass on the hill by the railroad tracks and crews were seen starting to depart the scene just before 1:00 PM, leaving a single grass rig soaking the burnt area left behind.
Several locations across Custer County have received well over 5 inches of precipitation so far in the month of June, no doubt assisting in the quick response of first responders to control the fire quickly.
