Broken Bow hosted Holdrege for an American Legion baseball juniors and seniors doubleheader at Paul Brown Field on Wednesday.
Holdrege held on to claim the juniors game 9-7. Broken Bow took an early 2-0 lead after the first inning but Holdrege responded with two runs in the top of the second to tie the game and then built a 7-3 lead after 4 1/2 innings. Broken Bow started to chip into the lead scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth. The teams both scored a run in the sixth with Holdrege adding one more in the 7th to make the score 9-6 going to the bottom of the 7th. After Broken Bow made the score 9-7, the Bow juniors had the bases loaded with 2 outs but could not come up with the clutch hit as Holdrege held on for the win. Dominic Nowak and Kanzas Kellum each had multi hit games for Broken Bow. Nowak was 2 for 3 with three runs scored and Kellum finished 2 for 3 with 1 run scored and three RBI. The Bow juniors are now 4-7 on the season.
The Broken Bow seniors put together one of their best overall performances of the season claiming a 9-1 win over Holdrege. Holdrege scored first taking advantage of a Broken Bow error in the 2nd inning to go up 1-0. The scored stayed that way until the bottom of the fourth when Broken Bow got the bats going as they sent 11 men to the plate in the inning and scored 7 runs to take control of the game. In the bottom of the fifth, with Bow leading 7-1, Zach Loy hit a two run homer to end the game as Broken Bow won 9-1 on the eight run rule after five. Other offensive highlights for Broken Bow included Coy Wardyn delivering a bases clearing triple with the bases loaded in the fourth inning. Kayden Record was 1 for 2 with 2 RBI and Brice Chaplin was 1 for 1 with two runs scored and 1 RBI. Max Denson was brilliant on the mound for Broken Bow finishing with a no hitter through five innings as Broken Bow was charged with two errors in the game. Denson walked only one batter and struck out seven on the night as the Bow seniors improve to 7-2 overall.
