2024 Loup City Polish Days, May 30 to June 2

LOUP CITY- Loup City’s Polish Days will kick off Thursday, May 30, and last until Sunday, June 2, 2024.

On Friday, the kolache bake-off begins at 10 a.m. with check-in at Carnegie Business Center. The entry fee is four dozen kolaches, and judging will be from 12:30 to 1:30. Then, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., a first come, first serve kolache sale. Melissa Dush, head chairperson of Loup City Polish Days, says that the money raised will help the Sherman County Sprout Child Care Initiative.

“All the proceeds go to our Sherman County Sprouts Child Care Initiative, which we’re finishing up currently to get a child care center in town. People can donate and bake 4 dozen kolaches.”

Friday will also include from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. a craft and vendor fair, quilt show, and axe throwing. From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. kids’ carnival and 5- 9 there will be food vendors downtown. Laser Tag at the Sherman County Courthouse Lawn will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and at 8:30 there will be a street dance with Jim Kucera Polka Band at the Sons of the American Legion Beer Garden on 7th street.

To start the day on Saturday at 7 a.m. at Jenner’s Park is the 5k Fun Run/1 Mile Walk hosted by the Arcadia/Loup City Cheerleaders. Then at 8 a.m., the 2nd annual pickleball tournament will be held at the tennis/pickleball courts at Jenner’s Park with a $20 entrance fee. The Co-Ed sand volleyball tournament begins at 8:30 at the new sand volleyball courts on the South end of Bowman Lake. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the craft and vendor fair and the quilt show will take place.

At 10:30 a.m., the parade begins with the theme “Popular Polkas.” The Polish Consul from Chicago will be in the parade and say a few words during it. After the parade, there will be axe throwing at the Courthouse lawn.

For food on Saturday there will be food vendors downtown from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. From 11:30 to 2 there will be an authentic Polish buffet available for $13 at the Loup City Diner. And at 12:30 to 3:30 the Sherman County Historical Society will have homemade ice cream and cookies.

For adult drinks there will be a Bloody Mary Bar at the O Street Lounge from 1 to 6. And at 8:30 p.m. the Sons of the American Legion Beer Garden will be open with the Loose Cannon Band playing.

Fun for kids on Saturday includes a petting zoo from 12 to 4, inflatable water park and bubble machine from 1 to 5, kiddie tractor pull at 1:30, and starting at 5, Rock-It Event Pros rides and attractions.

On Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. enjoy the Polish Highlights Breakfast Buffet at the Loup City Diner. 9 a.m. is the disc golf tournament, and at 10 a.m. is the Polish Days Golf Tournament. Polka Mass at St. Josaphat Catholic Church will start at 10:30 a.m.

To finish off the celebration, the 3 Guys Polka will be at the American Legion Beer Garden from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
