CUSTER COUNTY, NE – In a recent release, Nebraska Extension in Custer County extended an invite to the youth of the county to sign up for June Jamboree summertime youth activities. 4-H enrollment is not required to participate, so activities are open to any youth.
“Eleven activities have been planned for youth of various ages during the month of June,” says Colleen Peterson, Custer County 4-H Aide.
Those wanting to register for June Jamboree activities are asked to contact the Nebraska Extension- Custer County Office at 431 South 10th Avenue, Broken Bow, NE 68822 located in the lower level of the Custer County Courthouse in Broken Bow. All fees must accompany registrations and registration forms and program descriptions can be found at https://go.unl.edu/2024junejamboree.
Door Charms will be held on Monday, June 3 at the 4-H Building in Broken Bow, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. Boys and girls ages 8-13, by January 1, 2024, are invited to attend. In this class, youth will create a door charm with staff from The Rustic Patch from Kearney. Pre-registration and payment is required by May 24. Cost of the workshop is $25 per person. Instructors for this workshop will be Sonya and staff from The Rustic Patch in Kearney.
Growing Healthy Gardens will be held on Wednesday, June 5, 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the 4-H Building in Broken Bow. Youth ages 8 to 13, by January 1, 2024 are invited to attend. Who knew that learning about gardening could be so delicious? Join us for an afternoon learning about the different vegetable crop families and how they grow in the garden together to avoid diseases, battle insect pests and how we harvest your favorite veggies. These favorites will be turned into tasty treats for everyone to enjoy! Pre-registration and payment is required by May 28. Cost of the workshop is $15 per person. Instructor for this workshop will be David Lott, West Central District Extension Educator in Horticulture.
Farm to School Workshop will be held on Friday, June 7, 10:00-2:00 p.m. at the 4-H Building in Broken Bow. Youth ages 8 to 13, by January 1, 2024 are invited to attend. Have you ever wondered how new recipes get on the school lunch menus? During this workshop, we will explore farm to school and learn to prepare recipes and enjoy some delicious food. Youth will prepare their own lunch and snacks. Youth definitely won’t go home hungry! We can’t wait to see you for this day of food and fun! Pre-registration and payment is required by May 31. Pillow Power I will be held Monday, June 10 through Wednesday, June 12, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. each day at the 4-H Building in Broken. This workshop is for boys and girls ages 9 through 13, who have never participated in a June Jamboree Pillow Power class. Youth will learn beginning sewing techniques, sew a striped pillow, plus one other simple item. Pre-registration and payment is required by May 31. Registration fee is $20.00. This workshop is limited to 5 participants. A list of sewing supplies and fabric needed are available at the Extension Office. Participants may only register for one Pillow Power June Jamboree program…not both. Instructors for this workshop will be Colleen Peterson, 4-H Aide; and Charmayne Popp, Summer 4-H Staff.

Cooking Code will be held on Friday, June 14, 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the 4-H Building in Broken Bow. Youth in grades 3-8 are invited to attend. In this activity, youth will follow an algorithm to bake cupcakes, use patterning to decorate those cupcakes, change variables in an algorithm, and design an algorithm for others to follow to recreate cake-decorating patterns. A Space For Me – Clover Kids will be held Tuesday, June 18, 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the 4-H Building in Broken Bow. This workshop is for boys and girls who are ages 5-7 by January 1, 2024. Participants MUST bring an adult helper. Youth will create a no-sew pillow and enjoy a delicious snack! Participants will make their own fleece pillow which will be great for watching TV, playing video games, or just napping! This “no-sew” project is fun and easy. Fleece fabrics will be available in a variety of patterns and colors for boys and girls. Class is limited to 20 participants. Pre-registration and payment is required by May 31. Cost of the workshop is $20 per person, and includes all supplies and snacks. Participants must bring an adult helper and a pair of sharp sewing shears to cut fleece fabric. Clover Kids Making Food For Me will be held Wednesday, June 19, 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the 4-H Building in Broken Bow. This workshop is for boys and girls who are ages 5-7 by January 1, 2024. Participants MUST bring an adult helper. Participants will learn how to safely prepare food, learn the names of common kitchen utensils and how to use them, be introduced to appropriate behaviors of dining, and learn about the food groups. Pre-registration and payment is required by June 5 and this workshop is limited to 20 participants. Registration fee is $15.00 per person. Participants must bring an adult helper. Let’s Get Veggie will be held on Monday, June 24, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the 4-H Building in Broken Bow. This workshop will be for youth ages 12 and over. Not a big vegetable eater, let’s have fun learning to make Sushi roll and Spring rolls all while increasing the amount and kinds of vegetables you enjoy. Learn the basics of creating Chinese and Vietnamese rolls with an American twist! New foods will be included for everyone to try. NO uncooked foods will be served. Pre-registration and payment is required by June 17 and this workshop is limited to 25 participants. Registration fee is $20.00 per person. Instructor for this workshop will be Brenda Audfenkamp, Nebraska Extension Educator in Food, Nutrition, & Health.
4-H Modeling Workshop will be held Tuesday, June 25, 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Evangelical Free Church, West Memorial Drive in Broken Bow. Youth will have fun learning how to write narratives for the fashion show, learn how to model your 4-H garment to reflect the words in your narrative, and learn how to choose accessories for your 4-H garment. Participants will learn from the 2023 State Fair 4-H Stylists. Everyone is welcome to this FREE workshop! Even if you are not taking a clothing project this year, but you might in the future, feel free to come! This will be a great time to get questions answered and to practice modeling in the church where the fashion show judging and the public fashion show will be held. Registration deadline is June 19. Adventures in the Forest will be held on Wednesday, June 26, 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the Broken Bow Public Library. Boys and girls in grades K-5, in the Fall of 2024, are invited to attend. Youth will learn about the structure of a tree, how each part functions to help the tree grow, and how to identify what has happened in the life of a tree.
