BROKEN BOW – A 272-mile stretch of Highway 2 from Alliance to Grand Island brings in many tourists to Nebraska every year, and the route is called the Byway.

The Sandhills Journey National Scenic Byway held its annual meeting on Saturday, January 20th at the One Box Convention Center in Broken Bow.

The new Executive Director of the CEDC Scotti Ross gave a very warm welcome to the Banquet.

“We really appreciate this organization, we love collaborating with all of you guys.  I am so thankful for the hearts of all of the people who are in this room tonight because you have all dedicated so much volunteer time to preserving history and the land, and I just pray that that can continue for generations. I look to get more and more involved with organizations like yours so we can carry on these traditions for children like my daughter Meadow. And I just look forward to growing this cause, staying dedicated to it and I just really truly believe in it,” said Ross.

Following the welcome speech, Byway President Linda Teahon gave the awards presentation.

To start, Teahon stated that they are giving two entrepreneurial grants this year for $500. They had two applicants and they were both just so impressive that they could not choose just one.  The two recipients were Highway 2 Depot out of Mullen, and  The Market and the Mill out of Anselmo.

The Business of the Year Award went to Custer Federal State Bank. Custer Federal State Bank donates time to the Byway to speak on KCNI/KBBN once a month. The Friend of the Byway award recipient was Carolyn Henderson out of Hyannis. Henderson always shows up when the Byway needs her. For the Frontline Employee Award, Becky Griffith with the Market and the Mill was nominated three times and is very thankful for the award. The last award for the night was the Enhancement Award which was given to Anthem Coffee out of Thedford.

Not only does the Byway extend all across the Sandhills, but so do the awards and volunteers that help make the Byway what it is.
