GOTHENBURG- The Swedes of Gothenburg and the Indians of Broken Bow split a double header in Gothenburg Thursday night.
The girls contest had all the pregame hype that could be expected when two top-5 C-1 teams step onto the court, and the game delivered. Broken Bow jumped out to a quick lead, ending the first quarter up 19-12 with five players notching points in the scorebook.
The second quarter saw both teams contributing to a flurry of three point shooting, combining for five makes beyond the arc. Broken Bow outscored Gothenburg by two in the period, taking a 35-26 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Broken Bow outscored Gothenburg by six in the third and seven in the fourth with sixteen of their 34 points coming from the free throw line. For the game, the Indians shot 75% knocking in 21 of 28. The Indians were led by Halle McCaslin with 24, Gaby Staples with 18, and McKinley Tobey with 17. Broken Bow improved to 11-2 with the win, and will be back in action Friday as they welcome Valentine to town.
In the boys game that followed, Broken Bow jumped out to a great start shooting the basketball, scoring the first two points of the game and enjoying several four or six point leads in the first period. The second quarter started with Broken Bow just trailing by six.
In the second, Gothenburg pushed the gas pedal a little bit further as Broken Bow’s scoring slowed, capitalizing with scores off turnovers. The Swedes took an 11 point lead into halftime.
The Swedes came out hot in the second half outscoring Broken Bow16 to 9 in the third and 24 to 7 in the fourth for a 72-37 victory.
Broken Bow was led by Zach Jackson who tallied 13 points. The Indians will look to regroup as they also face Valentine in Broken Bow on Friday night.
