Victoria Springs Road Discussed During Supervisors Meeting

“What can we do to make this safer for the local people?”

The Custer County Board of Supervisors held their final meeting of this month on the morning of September 26 at 9 a.m. All board members were present.

The meeting was called to order where minutes from the last meeting, mail, and committee reports were reviewed.

The Corner Township has no board members currently. The County will set a public hearing for the termination of the Corner Township at a later date. The County will take over all obligations from the Corner Township.

Brandon Ball talked about the SSG Fox SPGP Suicide Prevention Program, which is a Veteran Suicide Prevention Grant Program. All veterans, except dishonorably discharged veterans are eligible for this program.  “The whole goal of the program is to decrease isolation, increase group participation and increase their support network by meeting other like-minded veterans who are going through the same things that they either have gone through or are going through.” They do this by holding weekly activity groups or support groups in Gering or the Scottsbluff area. If you want to learn more about this, you can call the Central Nebraska Community Action Partnership at (308)872-6013. The Lot 3, Pamida Addition will be continued into the next meeting, as will the Arnold River Road project.

A group of about 30 people showed up for concern about a road well-known as the Victoria Springs Road. Conner Sutton of Sargent was the spokesperson for the group and he focused on the excess traffic and safety issues, as well as possible illegal activity occurring on the road, and the 4-way stop sign at the Gates intersection. Members of the group shared close calls that they had experienced on the road and District 1 Supervisor Anne Gibbons stated, “I was nearly killed in a head on collision the Saturday before Memorial Day on that very road.” Sheriff Dan Osmond attended the meeting at the request of Sutton. Ultimately, the group’s main question to the Board and Sheriff Osmond was “What can we do to make this safer for the local people?” Board Chair Barry Fox said the Supervisors would research possible solutions, discuss those solutions with the Road Committee and Highway Superintendent Chris Jacobsen, and share options with the group at a future meeting.
