Private First Class Samuel J. McMillan recently completed graduation requirements of basic combat training for the United States Army at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.
McMillan graduated from Anselmo-Merna high school in May of 2023 and is the son of Thomas and Lisa McMillan of rural Milburn.
While at Fort Leonard Wood, PFC McMillan was a member of Alpha Company, 3rd Battalion, 10th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Platoon. For ten weeks, he has participated in physical training, first aid courses, team development, a confidence course, communications, and rifle and grenade training. Chemical, biological, and field exercises as well as map and land navigations were among a number of other required skills he successfully completed to achieve graduation.
In a class of nearly 200 soldiers, McMillan was the sole participant awarded a Certificate of Achievement for excellence in Basic Rifle Markmanship. He qualified as an “expert” by successfully engaging 36 of 40 moving targets at various distances and positions. In addition, PFC McMillan was awarded a medal and pin for “Top Shot Expert” for shooting competitions completed in Alpha Company.
PFC McMillan will now begin advanced individual training for a motor transport operator as part of the Army’s transportation logistics team. Upon successful completion of the seven week training, he will return to Nebraska.
