Area Cowboys and Cowgirls Give Strong Performances at National HS Finals Rodeo

The National High School Finals Rodeo came to its conclusion Saturday at Gillette, WY.

Recapping some of the area highlights, Coy Johnston of Stapleton had a top five finish in the steer wrestling.  Johnston posted times of 4.65 seconds in the first go, 5.88 in the second go, and 4.99 in the short go to finish 3rd overall in the average.

Sid Miller of Merna finished in the top ten in the tie down roping.  Miller posted times of 12.44 seconds in the first go, 11.38 in the second go, and 10.26 in the short go to finish 9th in the average.

Jace Hurlburt of Arcadia finished in the top twenty of the breakaway roping.  Hurlburt posted times of 2.5 seconds in the first go and 2.59 in the second go to finish 18th overall in the average.

Jason Ducker Kursave of Arcadia competed in the bull riding.  Ducker Kursave had a no score in the first go but then posted a score of 69 in the second go which put him in the top 25 in the final standings finishing 23rd overall in the average.

The top highlight for team Nebraska came in the breakaway roping where Kieley Walz of Ainsworth claimed the national finals championship. Walz finished first in the average with a total time of 6.19 seconds on three runs.

Other top 20 finishes for team Nebraska included Koltdyn Heath of Minden 13th in the barebacks, Tate Miller of Springview 17th in the barebacks, Reagan McIntyre of Grand Island 14th in the goat tying and 16th in the pole bending, Callie Olson of Bloomfield tied for 7th in reined cow horse, Sage Schrunk of Valentine 10th in steer wrestling, T.C. Hughson of Morrill 20th in steer wrestling, and Tate Talkington of Scottsbluff 6th in tie down roping.

Nebraska finished 8th overall in the girls team standings, 10th overall in the boys standings, and 9th in the combined. Texas was the team champion in all three categories.
