NDOT announces open applications for hay harvesting through July 31
Starting July 30 hay harvest permits will be accepted online.

LINCOLN – The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) has released a statement announcing that hay harvesting permit applications for the public will be accepted through their online application portal beginning Sunday, July 30 at 12:01 a.m.

Applications will be processed in the order they are received during normal business hours on Monday, July 31. The Nebraska Department of Transportation reminds individuals that they must have a permit to harvest hay on the State Right of Way.

According to NDOT, individuals may purchase hay harvesting permits online from this coming Sunday, July 30, through September 15 on a first-come, first-served basis, with each permit limited to 5 total miles of roadside hay.

The hay harvested is for private use only and only one permit will be allowed per person.

With NDOT’s online application, an online, interactive map will be made available to better help hay harvesters to select miles to mow and will be routinely updated to show miles available for permitting.

Landowners are given the opportunity to renew their permits from last year from now until Saturday, July 29.

While an online application is available, the option to purchase permits from specific NDOT locations in person will still be possible. More information about the permits and process can be found here.
