Treasurer’s Office reminds constituents of May 1 tax deadline, payment options

BROKEN BOW – The Custer County Treasurer’s Office has issued a release reminding constituents of the variety of service options available for the timely payment of taxes as well as the time frame to make payments.

First half real estate and personal property taxes will be due on May 1, as the typical April 30 deadline falls on a weekend. Constituents will be able to file on May 1 without interest charges.

As in prior years, the public can make payment for the first half tax deadline in person at the office, by courthouse drop box, or by mail. If mailing a payment, the postmark must be on or before Monday, May 1 to avoid interest charges.

Another option is available online through the County Treasurer’s website. Payment can be made by name, parcel number, or address. The Custer County Treasurer’s Office reminds the public that it is the taxpayer’s responsibility to ensure the accuracy of each parcel before initiating the transaction. If using the online payment method, constituents should be reminded of a portal fee charged by the State of Nebraska, the service provider.

The County Treasurer says that an option for taxpayers looking to possibly reduce that fee is by paying a flat $3 through e-check, as opposed to a 2.49% fee when paying with a card.

There are 2 drop boxes available for taxpayer use: one outside the courthouse on the west side of the building, and a second inside the courthouse’s main door; this drop box is only available for use during business hours, which are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The courthouse will be closed on Friday, April 28, however, to observe Arbor Day.

All questions and concerns can be directed to the Custer County Treasurer’s Office in person at 431 South 10th Avenue in Broken Bow, or by phone at (308) 872-2921.
