OMAHA – Local poet Addison Bryant, Anselmo-Merna senior, has had her poem “Un Corps” selected, along with 15 others statewide, for Opera Omaha’s Poetry & Music Project for 2022-2023.

Her poem was picked from a field of 135 submissions from 117 poets ranging from grades 3 through 12, and spanning 14 Nebraska counties.

Bryant will have the opportunity to develop her piece further this spring when it will be set to music by composers Gabrielle Herbst and J.E. Hernandez through collaborative, behind-the-scenes artistic workshops.

The debut of the piece will be Sunday, May 7 at 1 p.m. at the Benson Theater in Omaha; all 16 pieces will be heard at a free concert. For those unable to make the trip east, Opera Omaha plans to live stream the concert.

In addition to the musical collaboration, Bryant’s poem will be featured alongside all other submissions in the year’s book project, the theme of which was “Finding Your Voice.” The book will feature 5 sub-themes: joy, transformation, creativity, empathy, and overcoming obstacles.

The book will be distributed to all poets, teachers, and concert attendees, and will be made available online in May. Additionally, the work will become a part of the Omaha Public Library’s zine collection.
