SEM fell just short in their bid to make their first boys basketball state championship game appearance as top seed Wynot held on for a 53-50 win in the Class D2 state tournament semifinals Friday night at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln. Wynot led 27-24 at the half but extended that lead to 37-26 in the opening minutes of the third quarter. SEM fought back and went on a 10-4 run to close the quarter and cut the Wynot lead to five entering the fourth. Wynot led 53-47 with under a minute to play when SEM’s Jace Rosentreader hit a three from the corner to cut the lead in half and make it a one possession game. SEM immediately fouled and sent Wynot to the line where they missed both free throws and left the door open for the Mustangs. Ryan Arbuthnot launched a deep three at the buzzer in an attempt to send the game into overtime but it would fall just short as Wynot held on for the win. SEM had four players finish in double figures led by Kellen Eggleston who finished with a team high 12 points. Jayson Guthard had 11 while Noah Eggleston and Jace Rosentreader each finished with 10 for the Mustangs. SEM will play Shelton Saturday in the Class D2 third place consolation game at Lincoln Southeast High School. Shelton fell to Parkview Christian in the other D2 semifinal Friday 86-57. Saturday’s game between SEM and Shelton will be broadcast on KBBN 95.3 FM and kbbn.com with the tip off scheduled for 3 p.m.
