LINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has announced the schedule for the spring release of rainbow trout in waters across the state. Eighty-eight thousand fish are anticipated to be released.
This will give anglers and families, especially at city ponds and lakes, additional angling opportunities for this popular species.
It starts March 11, the opening day of the Trout Lake at Two Rivers State Recreation Area in Douglas County, with the following days promising the arrival of trout in area lakes and ponds.
On March 14, Windmill SRA’s Lake #2 in Gibbon will be stocked with 600 trout, and on the following day, March 15, Fort Kearny SRA’s Lake #6 will receive 1200 fish.
Auble Pond in Ord will be stocked with 750 trout on March 16, and on March 17 Victoria Springs SRA in Anselmo will receive 1200. On March 18, Gothenburg’s Lake Helen will be stocked with 2000 trout. Gracie Creek Pond will be stocked with 1000 fish at some point during the month if time and weather permit.
According to Game and Parks, rainbow trout are especially good for new anglers because they will bite readily on anything, including corn, wadded-up pieces of bread, or worms, and are easy and safe to handle. The fish can be caught using relatively simple and inexpensive equipment.
