Winds to increase, snowfall slow Wednesday night into Thursday

The National Weather Service office in North Platte issued a winter weather update at 4:10 Wednesday afternoon regarding the winter storm system going forward.

The update indicates that moderate to heavy snowfall will continue Wednesday afternoon, before becoming lighter Wednesday evening into the overnight with snow starting to taper off from west to east. Wind gusts around 30 mph or greater are possible Wednesday afternoon and through the overnight hours as well.

The Winter Storm Warning issued for our entire listening area has been extended to 6am CT on Thursday morning. Travel will continue to be hazardous to near impossible.

When the snow stops and the measuring starts, remember these tips for an accurate report:
1. Measure on a flat surface such as a picnic table or sidewalk in an open area away from tall objects, but also sheltered from wind.
2. Measure where snow appears to have drifted due to wind very little
3. Measure as soon as the snow stops to avoid lower totals due to melting, settling, and drifting
