Broken Bow School Board’s January Recap

BROKEN BOW – The Broken Bow School Board held its January meeting on Monday the 16 at 6 p.m. All board members were present.

The board approved the minutes from its January meeting and retreat, the treasurer’s report, and monthly claims.

Superintendent Darren Tobey highlighted the upcoming events for Broken Bow extracurricular activities, which include the girls’ basketball team hosting the first round of the recently-bracketed Southwest Conference tournament; Broken Bow, seeded third in the tournament, will play 6-seed Ainsworth on Tuesday, January 24. Tobey also emphasized that the district speech competition will also be held in Broken Bow on March 6.

Additionally, Tobey pointed to the district’s commitment to the growth and development of new teachers, and Broken Bow’s schools, this upcoming spring.

“We have three student teachers this semester. We’ve worked hard to connect with colleges to try and get kids in here to student teach, and it’s also an opportunity for them to interview for positions here for the next four months.”

The school board also approved its officers after the most recent election; all incumbents were reelected. Tom Osmond will remain the board president, Pam Holcomb vice president, and J.B. Atkins its treasurer.

Superintendent Tobey’s contract was also up for review. A three-year contract, it will run from 2023 through 2026, and this year will be the final year that the superintendent will receive bonuses for budgeting and MAPS scores. The superintendent’s base salary will increase a total of roughly $5,000 over those three years, landing at about $179,000 by 2026. The contract was approved unanimously.

The board then reviewed its COVID-19 protocol and decided that no changes were necessary for the time being. Students, families, and staff are still entrusted to self-screen for symptoms, and to be responsible for taking necessary precautions should symptoms arise.

The Broken Bow School Board’s next regular meeting was scheduled for February 20 at 6 p.m.; its biggest expected discussion is the upcoming school calendar. The meeting was adjourned at 6:35.
