Supervisors Shuffle New Blood and Old Roles in Year’s First Meeting
The Custer County Board of Supervisors met on Tuesday with 3 new faces.

BROKEN BOW – The Custer County Board of Supervisors held its first regular meeting of 2023 on Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. All members were present, including the newly-elected Chip Blowers, Sara Parliament, and Anne Gibbons. Supervisor Longmore was present telephonically.

The board reorganized its committees, unanimously reelecting District 3’s Barry Fox as its chairman and Lynn Longmore of District 6 as vice chairman. With the shuffling and filling of roles, the three newest supervisors will be serving on some of the following higher-profile committees, as well as a host of others: Anne Gibbons of District 1 will serve on the General Fund, the Budget Committee, and the Weed Management Committee; Sara Parliament of District 7 will step in on the Communications and Roads Funds alongside District 5’s Chip Blowers, who will additionally lend a hand on the Sheriff, Jail & Emergency Management Communication Committee as well as on the newly-founded Highway Buyback Committee.

The first two resolutions of the new year came before the board; Resolutions #1-2023 and #2-2023 both passed unanimously. The former, presented by County Treasurer Bryant, authorized the treasurer to invest funds and administer securities for the coming year, and the latter increased the mileage reimbursement rate for county vehicles from $0.625 to $0.655, with an exception for the Sheriff, which moved up to $0.685.

Township board positions were filled by nomination for Districts 1, 5, 6 and 7 which included Comstock, Corner, Garfield, Sargent, West Union, Triumph, Grant, Algernon, and Myrtle Townships. All nominations were approved unanimously; a list is below.

The board also voted to hire a new County Surveyor; Shawn Boyd of Miller & Associates will be offered a 4-year contract which will last through December of 2026. Boyd is also the County Surveyor for Furnas and Franklin Counties.

Weed Superintendent Conover delivered his annual report; Custer County’s Weed Department completed 130 inspections covering 24,397 acres. The Weed Department wrangled about $50,000 in grant money to help spray the South and Middle Loup Rivers in the county. Additionally, Conover was able to secure a drone for the department which will aid in future operations.

The meeting adjourned at 2:22 p.m., with the next scheduled for January 24.
