Gerald “Jerry” D. Sloggett, 88 of Loup City, NE went with the angels on Monday, April 12th 2021 on a beautiful Spring morning surrounded by family at his home at Sherman Reservoir near Loup City.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 17, 2021 at the Community Building in Loup City. Dean Millsap and Reverend Lori Stevens will officiate with a lunch to follow. Military honors will be held outside the Community Building following the service and will be provided by the Loup City American Legion Post #48 and Army National Guard. Cremation will follow the service and burial of the ashes will be held at a later date at the Broken Bow Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Friday, April 16 at the Community Building. Masks or face coverings are recommended as well as social distancing. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Sherman County Senior Center in Loup City, Custer County Diamond Youth Organization in Broken Bow or donor’s choice. Gerald (Jerry) Devern Sloggett was born on September 28th 1932 in Broken Bow, Nebraska to Wesley and Dorothy (Van Dyke) Sloggett. Jerry grew up and attended school in Broken Bow, Papillion and Bellevue, Nebraska. After high school Jerry enlisted in the United States Army and served his country from 1950 until 1953. He was honorably discharged after his service. Jerry married Ruth Stevens on June 7th, 1953 in Broken Bow. To this union 6 children were born. Joni (David) Ritchie of Sargent, NE; Michael (Katie) Sloggett of Eaton, CO; Steven Sloggett (Betty Gayley) of Lincoln, NE; Craig (Annette) Sloggett of Kearney, NE; Kent (Wendy) Sloggett of Broken Bow, NE and Jeanette (Doug) of Broken Bow, NE. Also left to carry on his memory are his siblings, Gordon (Jane) Sloggett of Stillwater, OK; Charles (Wanda) Sloggett of Custer, SD and Nancy (Clay Pressley) of Fresno, CA; brothers-in-law, Donald (Elaine) Stevens of Mountain Home, ID and George (Kathy) Witte of North Platte, NE and sister-in-law, Glenna Markham of Aurora, NE. Jerry and Ruth have 15 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
Jerry worked as a builder, the Old Home breadman, a contractor, and a businessman. With his wife and family, they owned and operated the Dairy Queen Restaurant for 10yrs. Together, Jerry and Ruth raised their 6 children and had countless adventures over the years. During their marriage they lived in several different communities in central Nebraska and one year in Florida. The couple purchased a cabin at Sherman Lake in Loup City, Nebraska 33 years ago
Jerry was a member of the United Methodist Church for over 50 years and served on the Church board a number of years. He was also a member of the American Legion and was very civic minded serving on several county boards over the years. Jerry enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with his family. He also enjoyed playing pool and cards. Jerry was a jack-of-all trades and could fix anything.
Greeting Jerry in heaven are his parents, Wesley and Dorothy Sloggett; brothers, Eugene and James Sloggett and great grandson, Dylan Dzingle.
