The region has been dealing with rainy conditions since Friday night and eventually all precipitation will change over to snow, creating impassable road conditions and limited visibility.
The National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning until 3 a.m. Sunday for southeast Nebraska, southwest Iowa and northwest Missouri. The snow expected Saturday afternoon will lead to whiteout conditions, making travel extremely dangerous. The weather service advises not to travel.
“If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you,” forecasters say. “If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle.”
Nick Carlyle, a meteorologist with the WeatherEye Weather Center, says four to eight inches of snow is expected for the area. Higher amounts, around a foot, could fall to the west and north of the region.
“We do have some rainfall that is ongoing right now, but it’s going to quickly change over to snowfall over the next two to three hours, possibly. Then just very heavy snowfall expected here for later on this evening, into the overnight hours. Blowing snow will be huge concern for later on tonight. We’ll expect to see wind gusts up to 50 MPH in some areas. Some white out conditions are likely. Definitely do not advise any travel for later on tonight, if you can.”
High temperatures today will be in the lower 30’s with lows in the upper teens. The forecast for Sunday calls for more blowing snow, with sunshine and high near 21.
Sunshine is expected pretty much everyday for the upcoming week. Temperatures will be in the low to mid-20’s.
