Omaha, NE.—Omaha’s potholes are in for a rematch.
Last week by just one vote the city council refused to let extra city-paid workers help fill the car-eating craters.
But now, with this year’s crop expected to be one of the worst in recent memory, the council is prepared to re-vote on the mayor’s plan which would shell out 450 thousand dollars for some independent contractors.
The administration says the help is needed because crews get overworked, with some quitting.
The union says the administration just needs to fill positions that are already open and accounted for in the budget.
Councilman Rich Pahls, a Republican, who initially voted against the Republican mayor’s plan is looking at a possible do-over, telling News Channel Nebraska he just wants to get the potholes filled.
Along with Pahls, three Democrats (Council President Ben Gray, Chris Jerram and Vinny Palermo) voted against the mayor’s proposal.
Two Republicans (Aimee Melton and Brinker Harding) were joined by Democrat Pete Festersen in voting for the measure.
