Transportation Secretary Talks Infrastructure, Punts Pipeline Safety Question

Omaha, NE.—According to Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao, until she stopped in Omaha today, she’d never been asked a key question involving the Keystone XL Pipeline.

The Secretary spoke with News Channel Nebraska’s Joe Jordan:

NCN: Is it safer to put that oil in a pipeline or by rail to transport it?

Sec. Chao: You know that’s not really a decision by the federal government. Our issue is safety whether it be on rail or whether it be in pipelines.

NCN: Do you think they are equally safe?

Sec. Chao: I’ve never been asked that question. I think what’s really important is whatever way the private sector decides to move its goods that is what we need to be concerned about.

Chao was in Nebraska meeting with U. S. Sen. Deb Fischer and stakeholders in rural and urban transportation.
